Write down the purpose

Try a plain-language statement: “I am researching this because…” Add a timeframe and the questions you cannot yet answer. This is a way to organize your thinking, not a recommendation to buy anything.

Understand what you are being offered

The SEC’s investor education site encourages investors to understand an investment, compare its risks with its possible rewards, and check the background of the person offering it. A compelling presentation is not a substitute for understanding the underlying product.

Keep your next step small

Your next step might be reading the disclosure documents, checking a registration, or preparing for a conversation with a professional. You do not need to turn every learning session into a transaction.

MAKE IT USEFUL

Bring these questions.

  • What is the decision I am actually making?
  • What might I need to understand before committing?
  • Which source can help me check the information?
